The upper arm has a larger heart outlined in rainbow colours, with its centre left as bare skin, set against a plain grey background and tiled floor.

Dana found the tracing paper in the bottom drawer of her mother's sewing box, the same thin sheet they had used at fifteen to copy a heart onto the back of a school planner. The sports hall smelled of floor polish and cheese and onion crisps. Across the room, under a banner that read Thirty Years On in peeling gold letters, Mo was pretending not to look at her.

They had planned the matching hearts on the coach to Scarborough the summer after their exams. Mo wanted the stripes from the pride flag that had hung in the youth club until someone cut it down. Dana wanted the middle left empty. 'So there's room for whoever comes next,' she had said, and Mo had called her soft, then drawn the thing so carefully that the artist asked who had done the outline.
Mo crossed the hall with two plastic cups of wine and held one out without a word. She pushed up the sleeve of her cardigan. The solid heart was softer now, the red bleeding a little into the orange, the purple gone the colour of a bruised plum. Dana turned her own arm over so the bare patch in the centre caught the strip lights.
'I thought you'd have filled yours in by now,' Mo said. 'I thought you'd have found someone to do it.' Dana took the cup and set it down on the trestle table. 'I kept the space,' she said. 'You were always meant to be the one who finished it.' Mo laughed, a short surprised sound, and pressed her arm against Dana's until the two hearts sat side by side, the full one fitting neatly into the hollow one as if it had always been meant to.
