You will remember the ink shop on Dock Street, where the man with the brass spectacles wrote our two phrases out in a copperplate hand so we could choose which one to keep. You laughed and said we'd never need to choose, that we would simply tell people which half was which. I have thought about that a good deal out here, with the sea going flat and grey for days on end.

The gale came on Thursday night. The glass dropped so fast Hale swore, and the spray hit the lantern panes hard enough to make the whole tower hum. At half past two the beam swung out over the water and found nothing but black, and I stood at the rail counting the seconds until it came round again, the way you used to count the lamps on the Humber bridge from our bedroom window.

I have written both phrases in the margin of the log, under the barometer readings, in my roughest pencil. If the inspector ever wants to know what kept this light burning through the autumn, he will have to read them first. Tell Mum the lamp is lit and the tea is strong.
