Matching script tattoos across two ribcages
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, photographed from behind, with matching black script wording across the ribs and side of the torso. The linework is fine and even, with softly shaded thin strokes, and the words run horizontally and are partly cut off at the edge of the frame. The image is in colour with a plain dark red background, and the skin tones and dark denim are natural.

Brother Oswin had spent the whole of Lent ruling lines for the Abbey of Saint Wenna, and by Easter his hand had learned only one phrase it could not lose. Ave matris, ave mater, he wrote in the margin of every folio, a little prayer he added the way other men hummed at the plough. The abbot had forbidden it twice. The ink was dear, the vellum dearer, and the salt merchants paid for copies, not devotion.

His sister Hild worked the bench across from his and copied the same words along the lower edge of her pages, so the two of them were always finishing each other's prayers over the same wax tablet. When the flood came up the Sellan valley in autumn, the river took the eastern granary and half the chapel roof. Hild was sent south with the finished books on a mule cart, and Oswin stayed behind to dry the pages that had survived in the loft.
Weeks later a carter brought him a bundle wrapped in oilcloth. Inside, beneath a scrap of her letter, was a folio with a single line gone brown at the edges: the same two words, cut short where the sheet had been torn. Hild had written only the first phrase of a second line before her ink ran out, and she had sent it anyway, so that he would have to finish it himself.
He sat until the candle guttered, then dipped his pen and wrote mater in full, and the letters ran to the edge of the parchment and no further. He sent it back down the road with the cart the next morning, not as a reply but as the other half of the sentence, and he did not sign it.
