Matching quote tattoos on two forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two pairs of inner forearms are shown side by side, each carrying a single line of black serif lettering in a typewriter style. The left line reads i carry your heart with me, angled up across the arm, while the right line reads (i carry it in my heart) in a slightly tilted line. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a dark background, with a plain, close crop focused on the two tattoos.

Ada walked the lane to the edge of Hollin Wood every morning once the carter stopped coming, and every morning she found the same thing pinned to the gatepost: a folded slip of paper, dry as biscuit, weighted with a pebble. Her brother Ned wrote short, because he had never trusted long sentences to stay true.

Today the slip said only, in his square capitals, that the beeches had dropped their nuts early and the deer were thin. Underneath, in pencil, he had written the line they had agreed on when they were nine and too proud to cry at the station: I carry your heart with me. She folded it into her apron pocket and went back under the trees, where the canopy was so thick the light came down the colour of weak tea.
Half a mile in, a hollow oak held a tin box with a broken hinge. Inside, she kept her answers. She had never once missed a day. That morning her reply took longer than it should. She wrote, scratched it out, then wrote what he would need to hear: that the bramble by the stile had gone to fruit, that Mother had stopped asking when he'd be home, that she was carrying nothing heavier than a basket. Then, because the pebble was still warm from her hand, she added the second half of the promise and signed it with a single stroke, the way they had learned to sign everything.
Ned came home at Michaelmas, so thin his coat hung off him like a sail. He found the tin before he found her. On the lid, scratched small with a nail, were the words she had been too shy to say aloud. He read them twice and then, to her astonishment, laughed until he had to sit down on the root.
