Two script quotes on forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are pressed together, each carrying a line of black script lettering on the inner forearm. The upper line reads For them I'd risk it all, angled slightly upward, and the lower line reads Because of her I will not fall, split over two lines. The linework is clean and even in solid black ink against pale skin, with the photograph taken at close range in a domestic kitchen setting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rope had been Marnie's idea, a fat blue hawser bought from a dead climber's kit sale in Todmorden, and Tobias had never let her forget that he was the one who tied the first bowline in it. They were forty feet up Hangman's Nab when the flake under his left boot gave a soft, papery crack, like a crust breaking. He swung off the wall with nothing beneath him but air and the line running through her gloves.

Marnie set her heels into a crease in the gritstone and felt the rope bite across the heel of her hand. Below them the reservoir lay flat and grey, the colour of the kitchen table where they had sat in March with a biro and a ruler, drawing their lines out in pencil before Tobias took them to be inked. He had lettered hers in a neat slant. She had done his the same way, then argued about the comma for twenty minutes.

"Hold," he called, not as a question. She held. The muscles in her forearm pulled tight, and the words there seemed to settle into the weight as if they had been waiting for exactly this. He found an edge with his fingertips, then a knuckle-sized ledge, and hauled himself the last body length onto the belay, breathing like a bellows.

Afterwards, back in the kitchen with the kettle on and the rope steaming on the radiator, they pressed their forearms together under the strip light, two pale stripes of ink side by side. Neither of them mentioned the crack. Marnie just tapped his wrist once with a finger, the way you knock on a door you already know is open.
