Matching coordinate tattoos on ankles
Lettering · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two people's ankles are shown side by side, each with three lines of latitude and longitude coordinates written in a plain, typewriter-style serif font. The ink is a blue-tinted dark shade with crisp, even lines and no shading. The photo is taken close up against a warm yellow wall and wooden floor, with the tattoos sitting slightly off centre.

He said the block stood on a point the old surveyors had got wrong. The river had once come up to the corner of the car park, he said, and a man could still find the old tideline if he knew which numbers to take from the sky. Ida said he was a pensioner with a telescope and too much tea. He said that was fair, and then he showed her the pencilled figures on the back of his hand.

Teodor took his readings for an hour while the wind pulled at Ida's coat. Then he wrote three lines on each of their ankles, and they walked those figures down nine floors, across the ring road, and into the bus shelter by the chip shop, the one nobody ever used.
The 17 came at quarter past six, though it was never timetabled then. The driver looked at the numbers inked above Ida's shoe, nodded as if he had been expecting them, and waved the pair of them on without asking for fares.
