Matching runic compass tattoos on forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms rest side by side on a wooden table, each bearing a bold black tattoo of a symmetrical runic compass-style symbol with radiating arms and rune-like marks. The left design is more open and has branching marks with a central circle, while the right uses thicker, evenly spaced strokes around a central hub. The tattoos are solid black on bare skin, and a pale beer glass sits between the arms against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Renault had already been waved through once, which is why I leaned into its window with my torch and asked the driver to step out. Two men climbed out in grey jumpers, with the same stubborn set to their jaws, though the papers said they were not brothers. Lars had a boot full of reindeer antlers and a receipt to prove it. Tobias had the map. He unfolded it across the bonnet and pinned the corners with two tins of pickled herring, and I saw the figure drawn in biro in the margin: eight arms reaching out from a ring, each tipped with a stroke like a broken branch. He said his grandfather had taught him to find a road in a whiteout with nothing but that shape and a steady hand.

The rules say a passport must match the face. Nothing in the rules covers a drawing. I asked what it was for. Lars said it was called a helm of awe, and that two men who trusted each other would each carry one, so the road could never take either of them. I told him I had never heard of a road that took anyone. He grinned and said that was the whole point of roads.

My own compass sat on the shelf by the kettle, its needle lazy and stuck to the east for as long as I had worked the post. While I stamped their entry forms, it swung slowly round and settled on north, as if someone had tapped the glass. I did not mention it. I waved them on, and the Renault pulled away into the blue dark with its headlights bending over the snow.

Later I found the map on the bench where Tobias had left it. I smoothed it flat and traced the drawing with one finger, eight arms, eight ways out. Then I copied it onto the back of a duty sheet, very carefully, and pinned it above the kettle, where the needle could see it too.
