Tribal swirl design on forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tribal-style design of spirals, scrolls and tapered curved points on the inner forearm. The linework is solid and dark brown to black, with a uniform, slightly glossy finish and soft edges. The design is centred in the frame against a warm, speckled granite background, with the arm running diagonally across the image.

The henna had gone dark by the Sunday, which my aunt said was the only honest thing about it. I had been out since seven, cutting the last of the lawsonia from the pot beside the shed, the leaves gone leathery in the September heat, while Nan's brass mortar sat on the garden wall where she left it in 1998, a tea towel folded over it like a cloth over a birdcage.

She drew her spirals on the backs of seed packets. Scrolls that curled like fern heads, and tapered points she called scorpion tails, though she had never seen a scorpion outside a film on the telly. I pounded the leaves with lemon juice and a spoon of sugar, the way she showed me, until the green smelled sharp enough to make my eyes run. Then I sat on the back step with the paste going stiff on the plate and tried to remember the shape of the thing without looking.
Halima rang on the Tuesday and asked if I would do the design for her cousin's wedding. I told her I could do it, and I meant it, but when I sat down with a biro the swirl would not come. My hand kept making the same mistake, too round at the crown, the tails too blunt. It was only when I stopped thinking and let the nib wander across the seed packet that the old lines appeared, one scroll feeding the next, as if the page had remembered them.
The paste flaked off in the end, as it always does, and left the skin a rusty orange that deepened over the week into brown. Nan's pattern was there in the lines, a little wobbly at the edges, and the garden smelled of lemon and crushed leaves whenever the wind came round the shed.
