Two forearms are pressed together, each carrying a line of cursive script in black ink. The upper line reads I will never let you fall and the lower line reads I'll stand up with you forever. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the soft focus and warm skin tones keep the composition close and intimate.

The lane up to the top field had iced over in the night, and the ewes were bawling from the far side of the beck where the hurdles had come down. I had the feed bucket in one hand and the torch in my teeth when Nell stepped onto the slope ahead of me, and I watched her boots go out from under her like a dropped coat.

She didn't cry out. She just went flat and slid, straight toward the black water under the alders. I dropped the bucket and feed scattered across the white like seed. I didn't think. I went down on my hip, dug my heels into the frozen ruts and caught her wrist just as her fingers reached the lip of the bank. My arm took her whole weight for what felt like a minute and was probably four seconds, the cold biting through my sleeve, the torch rolling off into the reeds and still burning.

Afterwards we sat in the shippon with our sleeves pushed up and steam coming off us. Nell swore at the bruise already blooming on my forearm, the one that had hit the bank. I meant to tell her off properly, but what came out was what Gran used to say when a lamb got stuck in the wire: hold on, I've got you. Nell laughed, a bit wet, and we both looked at the words we'd had put on our arms in March in Ripon, one line each in the same thin hand, and neither of us said anything for a while.

Next morning the frost had furred every hurdle white. I fed the ewes and found our prints in the snow, hers and mine, side by side along the lane until they met at the gap where the wire had snapped. I stood there a long time, looking at the place where the two sets of boots had stopped together.
