Matching sister quote tattoos on lower backs

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side, seen from behind, each with a line of black script lettering across the lower back. The left tattoo reads 'There is no better friend than a sister...' and the right reads '...and, there is no better sister than you', so the two lines continue one another. The thin, even linework sits on warm brown skin, with no colour ink, and the backdrop shows grey and pink sports wear and jeans.

Sit yourself down, you're letting the heat out. The Ardent's galley had a stove the size of a hearse and two girls who fought over it like cats. Ada and Nell Pryce came aboard at Hull in the spring of '58, sisters, sixteen and nineteen, with one kitbag between them and a tin of boiled sweets they never shared. Cook reckoned they'd be gone by Gibraltar. They weren't.

The winter we lost our foremast off the Dogger Bank, Nell went below for the lamp oil and a sea came over the rail and tore the companion hatch clean off its hinges. Ada heard her name over the wind, went down that ladder without touching a rung, and hauled her out by the collar of her oilskin. Nobody made a fuss. Ada just said, "Well, you'd have done the same," and went back to peeling potatoes.

When the Ardent was broken up at Blyth, Ada had the galley clock taken off the bulkhead and carried it home in a sack. She had Nell's initials scratched into the brass rim, and her own under them. I asked her why she never just wrote her sister's name out proper. She said the name wasn't the thing, it was the saying of it. Then she tapped the glass with one finger and said, "There is no better friend than a sister," and waited, and Nell, who was stood in the doorway with a kettle, said, "And there is no better sister than you," and neither of them ever argued about the stove again.
