Matching scrolled heart tattoos on shoulders

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are shown from behind, each with an identical heart outline filled with curling scroll details. The linework is solid black and the hearts sit at a similar angle on the upper back and shoulder. The background is a plain indoor space with a soft, slightly blurred edge, and no colour ink is present.

Dear Carol,

The lift's out again, so I'm writing this on the fourteenth floor landing with my knees complaining. Mrs Okafor from twelve says the council will fix it by Easter, which is what they said about the damp.

I found your old biro in the drawer with the takeaway menus. I drew the hearts on the back of the repair form, the one with the wrong postcode, the way we used to do on the flyleaves of our school books. Yours had the curls going the wrong way round, I'm sure of it. You always did scrolls backwards, like you were writing to the other side of the page.

At the arcade on Sunday the lad with the stencil kept telling us to hold still. We sat under that flickering strip light, neither of us wanting to look first. I thought about the day the flat flooded and you carried the telly up the stairs on your back, swearing at every step. Turns out I'm not the only one who can't leave a thing alone.

Anyway, the lift. Come on the train Saturday and we'll climb up together, counting the floors out loud like we did as kids. The heart on the form points down towards the car park, so you'll know which way to look. I've left the door on the latch.
