Two matching black fine line compass rose tattoos with swirling needle points on the inner wrists of two people.

Matching compass tattoos on the wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner wrists show identical compass roses with N, E, S and W labels and arrowed points, with curling swirls at the centre. The linework is thin and black, with no shading or fill, and the two designs are placed at the same angle. The photo is taken against a plain pale skin background with a kitchen-style setting behind, and the hands are shown from above.

Dear Mags, the ferry was late again, so I've been sat on the harbour wall since six with a flask of your tea going cold beside me. You'll be pleased to know the gulls have finally given up on my sandwich. I keep thinking about the kitchen table last night, the way you pressed the pen so hard the nib tore the paper, and how you swore you'd only draw the compass once, neat as a surveyor, and then went off and made it curl like a fern. I told you it looked like a mistake. You said north was always going to be a bit of a showoff.

The crossing is booked for Thursday, provided the wind drops, and I've already packed the other half of the drawing in the tin with Dad's letters. You'll find the tin under the stairs where you left it, with the lid taped shut. Don't open it before the weekend. I mean it. There are the bus tickets, the photo of the two of us outside the chip shop in Wick, and the sketch you did on the back of the bill.

The man at the chandler's says the sea will be kind to us if we keep the sun on our left in the mornings. I don't know what that means, but he nodded like it settled something, so I'm holding it close. Ring me when the frost lifts off the top field, and tell the sheepdog I'm sorry I forgot his biscuits again.

All my love, and the wrong way round, as ever, Ellie.
