Matching Mother and Daughter script tattoos
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two near-identical tattoos sit on the lower legs of two people, one with the word Daughter and the other with the word Mother in flowing script. Each word is enclosed by an outlined heart with decorative swirls extending from it. The linework is clean and black with light grey shading, and the photograph is taken at a casual angle against a dark background.

Dear Nell,

The frost came early past the mill, and I had to go in among the alders for the last of the sloes because the bramble over the wall has all gone to leaf. Tom Pardoe says the wood has been stirring since they dug the new lane, but he says that about everything, so I took the basket and went in with the lamp anyway.
Under the big oak beyond the old stile, where the roots lift out of the ground, someone had tucked a bundle of red wool into the bark. Looped round it was a little heart cut from a split shingle, and scratched beneath it was the word HOME, the letters running out at their ends in curls, as if they'd been written by a quick hand. I stood there longer than I should have. Your grandmother used to say the forest keeps what you leave it and gives back what you need, though never in the shape you asked for.
I took the wool. I'm not ashamed of it. It's blue with a thread of gold through it, the same as the scarf you wore out of here the morning you left for the coast, so I'm sending it back to you folded inside this letter. Tell me whether it's yours, or whether the wood has been lying again.
Write when the tide allows. Bring the sloe gin recipe if you still have it in your own hand. The kettle's on, and the door is on the latch.
