Two black and grey sugar skull tattoos on a pair of forearms, one with floral detail on the forehead and one with hair and a rose, with the fists pressed together.

Matching sugar skull tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two sugar skull designs sit on separate forearms, one with a floral pattern across the forehead and one with hair swept up and a rose beside the head. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, giving the skulls depth and detail on the teeth and eye sockets. The image is entirely black and grey, shot close up with the fists pressed together in the foreground.

When we shook hands at the gate, the two skulls were meant to face each other, and I have never once let myself forget which of us was supposed to stay.

The manifest says the lighter has room for two more on the next run down to the Kessler basin. Mrs Okonedo at the galley swears the ground settlements have soil that still remembers rain, which I won't believe until I've put my hand in it. On Tuesday I went down to the archive and pulled Grandmother's old drawings, the ones that show how sugar skulls were once painted for feast days so the dead could come back and laugh at the living. She would have laughed at this letter. She would also have told me to stop sulking and pack the good thread.

I know you think I'm only coming because I miss you. That's true, but it isn't all of it. I want to stand under open sky and find out whether the grin still fits a face that has seen the sun.

Meet me at the blue hatch on third shift. Bring the hairpin you took from Mum's drawer. I'll bring the ink, and between us we can finish the rose on your arm that Dad's needle never quite closed.
