Skull and roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic skull is framed by several roses and a rosebud, with leaves filling the gaps around the design. The skull and petals are shaded in grey with soft gradients and fine stippling, and bold black outlines define the edges. The image shows the same tattoo twice, side by side, on the inner and outer view of a forearm against a dark background.

Pelagia would not let the gardener dig up the old skull. It had turned up in the trench when they laid the drain below the vineyard wall, grey as river stone, and the boy who found it wanted to sell it to the travelling bone-man from Thessaly. She took it from him, washed the earth from its teeth with rainwater, and set it in the bed beside the damask roses where the morning sun could reach it.

The roses grew strangely after that. Each red bloom opened a little more slowly than the last, as though it were listening, and the leaves came in dark and thick as ink. Her neighbours said the skull was a king who had lost a wager with the god of the underworld and was paying his debt in flowers. Pelagia laughed at them and went on pruning, but she talked to the skull while she worked, the way she talked to her goats.
One autumn a stranger in a grey cloak came up the road asking for water. He stood at the gate a long time looking at the bed. 'You have something of mine,' he said. Pelagia looked at his hands, which were thin and patient, and then at the skull, which had no jaw left to speak with. 'It has been in my garden a year,' she said. 'Then you have had the best of it,' he answered, and drank his water, and walked on down the road without asking for anything more.
That spring the roses opened all at once, every bud, and the skull's brow was bright with petals. Pelagia never dug it up again. She only noticed that the bed had grown no larger, though she had planted more each year, and that a rosebud at the edge, one she had never planted at all, had come up on its own and was the first to open.
