Matching skull tattoos on the wrists
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two shaded grey skulls sit side by side on the inner forearms near the wrists. The left skull wears a red polka-dot bow, and the right skull wears a black top hat, a moustache and a red polka-dot bow tie. The shading is smooth and detailed, with the red accents standing out against the greyscale.

The top hat came into Corran's on a wet Tuesday, wrapped in a tea towel and carried under the arm of a man who would not look at the counter. Folded flat inside the crown was a red polka-dot bow, the sort a woman ties in her hair when she means to be noticed. Mr Corran turned the hat over twice, the way he turned over everything, and named a price that made the man wince and then nod.

What he did not say was that he had seen the bow's twin before. Three winters back, a girl with a bob and a rattling cough had left a red bow on the glass and asked whether a thing could be worth more than the head it was tied to. He had told her no. She had laughed, left it anyway, and he had kept it in the drawer under the brass scales, because he could not bring himself to sell it to anyone who might wear it to a wedding.
That evening he opened the drawer and laid the two bows side by side. They matched exactly: the same pinch at the knot, the same ring of dots worn pale where a thumb had rested for years. He wrapped the hat again in its towel and set it on the shelf marked NOT FOR SALE. Then he took the old ticket book from under the till and, page by page, found the girl's name and the address she had given, written in a hurry and smudged by rain.
In the morning he posted the bow in a brown envelope with no note at all, and kept the hat where it was, waiting for the man to come back and ask for it.
