On a wet Thursday two lads in matching anoraks came in and stared at the drawer as if it might open by itself. They had a lightning bolt sketched on the back of a bus timetable and wanted to know if anything had turned up on platform nine and three-quarters. Mrs Pruett told them there was no such platform, only a painted sign by the gents that some child had scratched the figures into. The shorter one looked at the taller one like she'd just confirmed something important.

The key, it turned out, opened a tin trunk their nan had left in the cellar behind the Co-op. Inside were forty years of letters from a signalman called Albert Lowther, who had sent one every Friday to a woman in Todmorden who never wrote back. The last envelope held a pocket watch stopped at 4.17, and a note that said only: give this to whoever finds the key.

Mrs Pruett made them promise to bring the watch back to the shelf once they had read the letters. Next Thursday it sat on the counter, ticking again, with a scrap of card beside it. She noticed the same three small marks on each of their forearms as they reached for it. She put the key back in the drawer and did not bother to ask them to sign for anything.
