Matching heart tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side with palms turned towards the camera, each bearing an identical small tattoo. Each design is a simple outlined heart in red with three short black strokes curving above it, suggesting a glow or burst. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the composition is tight and centred on the two tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kettle had boiled dry twice by the time Nell got the lamp to catch in the back bedroom window of Sealark House, and Auntie Bea was still on the stairs, calling down that the fog had come in off the bay like wet wool. Nell didn't answer. She was watching the grey beyond the groyne, where the Mary Ellen should have been tacking home an hour since with the Pritchard boys aboard.

The lamp was an old paraffin thing with a cracked chimney, and the tea towel wrapped round it had scorched brown along one edge. Bea came down, took one look at the mess on the windowsill, and said, "You daft article," but softly. She fished a pencil stub out of the drawer of the hall table and pressed it into Nell's hand.

They drew it together on the back of an unpaid gas bill: a small heart with three short strokes curving above it, the way the lamp threw its light out over the water. Then Bea pressed the paper to the inside of Nell's wrist so the pencil came away on her skin, and Nell did the same to her aunt, and they sat at the window holding their arms up to the glass like something they had caught.

Around two the foghorn at the point went quiet, and a single bell answered somewhere out in the murk. Neither of them moved until the Mary Ellen's lamp came swinging round the groyne, low and unsteady. Bea said, "There," and Nell found she could not say anything at all.
