Matching friends script wrist tattoos

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Three wrists are shown together, each with the word friends written in a flowing script outline. The linework is black and fairly even, with small red and green dots placed at the ends of the letters. The tattoos sit close together against a plain, lightly lit background.

The stencil came out of the printer backwards, which was Ruth's fault for insisting on doing it at two in the morning on the back of a takeaway menu. I held it up to the streetlight through the sticky window of our flat above the chippy on Woodhouse Lane and read FRIENDS in reverse, the loops of the F trailing off like a sentence nobody bothers to finish.

'Red for Ruth, green for me,' Kemi said from the sofa, where she was pretending to be asleep. 'Jo gets both, because she needs the most looking after.'

'I do not,' Jo said, and held out her wrist anyway.

The shop opened at ten. The artist, a patient woman with a kettle always going behind the counter, asked which way up each word should sit. Ruth wanted hers the right way for her own eyes, Kemi wanted hers facing outward so strangers could read it, and Jo said nobody would ever read it from a bus stop unless they were looking for trouble. We argued until the bus outside had come and gone twice. In the end we turned the stencils until the three words lined up across the table, one upright, one sideways, one upside down, the way they actually sit when we press our wrists together under the lamp. We have never once agreed on which way is up, and the word only reads properly when all three of us are touching.
