Matching wrist script quotes in black ink
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown with the palms facing the viewer, each carrying a black script phrase across the wrist, one reading It's Only Forever... and the other Not Long At All. The lettering uses flowing script with bold strokes and fine tails, in solid black ink with no colour. The dark background and soft lighting keep the focus on the two tattoos.

Mind the rope, love, it's slick where the tide has been. Aye, that's them, the Pargeter girls. Forty years I've ferried them out to the island and back, and they've argued the whole way every time, like two loaves fighting for the same tin.

Their mother died in the February and left them the bakehouse on Rampside and a recipe book written in pencil. Edie wanted to sell up and be done with it. Joan wanted to bake until the oven gave out. They fought over that ledger on my bench every Thursday, and every Thursday one of them would say it. 'It's only forever, Joan, the bread, the bay, the lot of it.' And the other would answer, 'Not long at all, Edie,' and they'd both laugh like girls and not speak to each other for a mile.
Last crossing before the autumn gales, Edie sat with the book on her knees and the rain running off the brim of her hat. Joan asked to see it, and Edie handed it over without a word. Joan turned the pages slowly, and stopped at the back, where their mother had written something small and crooked in the margin. Joan read it out loud to nobody in particular, then shut the book and held it against her chest.
They got off at the slip with flour still on their sleeves and didn't argue once. The oven was lit at the bakehouse that night, and I saw the glow through the window as I tied up. Joan had one hand pressed flat over Edie's, both of them smelling of yeast, and neither of them was saying anything at all.
