Matching sister script on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms are pressed together, each showing a handwritten script tattoo. The left arm reads I heart my big sister and the right reads I heart my little sister, with a small outlined heart between the words on each. The black linework is fine and even, with small pink hearts adding the only colour against the skin.

Mags Hollen had been up since three, and by half past four the ovens had settled into their rhythm, the tins knocking softly against the rack. Her younger sister Ruth came in through the back door with flour already on her cheek, having walked the frost-stiff lane from the farm without a torch. "You're late," said Mags. "I'm early," said Ruth. "The cockerel's still asleep."

They worked without talking for a while. The old tale in the village said the first loaf out of a bakehouse before dawn belonged to whoever had kept the fire alight through the longest night, and every winter the sisters argued over it, each claiming the other had done more. This year Mags had let the fire burn low on purpose, the way she used to when they were girls and Ruth was small enough to be sent for kindling, so that her sister would have to wake and come down.
Ruth found the note pinned inside the flour bin, written in Mags's square hand on the back of a delivery slip. It held the words neither of them had managed to say since their mother died. Ruth pressed it flat on the table and read it twice. Then she took the little tin heart from its hook and pressed three hearts into the dough of the first loaf, one for each of them and one for their mother, who had always said the top crust was where a family showed its love.
When the sun finally lifted over the ridge, the loaf was still warm in its cloth. Mags tore it in two, gave the larger piece to her sister, and kept her own with the heart-marked crust turned up to the window, so the morning light fell on the three small hearts and stayed there a while.
