Mechanical gears and clockwork on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo covers the upper arm of a person in a black sleeveless top, showing cogs, a pocket watch face with Roman numerals, and metal plates with scrollwork. The shading is smooth and three-dimensional, with strong highlights and cast shadows that make the metal parts look raised from the skin. The design fills most of the frame against a blurred green background.

Nell had the brass plate off the second wheel before the shift bell finished ringing, her father's pocket watch open on the bench beside her so she could match the teeth. The watch had stopped at twenty to four on the morning the cage jammed at Harrowgate Drift, and nobody in Shaw Lane had wanted it mended since. She wanted it mended now.

Her father's hands had been the steadiest in the village, and she had his habit of holding a loupe to one eye while the other squinted at nothing. Old Mr Pryce from the colliery office came to the door with his ledger and a face like wet slate. "They want the winding engine turning by noon," he said. "Can you spare a day?" She said she could spare the afternoon, and then she spent it on a bent pinion that had been cracked for years, filing it true with the patience of someone who had learned that metal forgives nothing and forgets less.
By dusk the drum was turning, its gears clacking in the dark like a slow argument that somebody had finally agreed to end. Nell carried the watch back up the lane in her coat pocket. Its cracked crystal had split across the seven and the hands had frozen at a quarter past, which she decided was close enough. She wound the crown, pressed the case to her ear, and heard the small steady tick come back to her.
She hung it on the nail by the door, where the lamp could catch the scrollwork on its case. "Cage goes down at six," she told the empty kitchen, and the watch ticked on regardless.
