The Ferriers' reel-to-reel came into Dawson's on a Tuesday, wedged between a sack of wool and a box of wireless valves, and Ada Dawson could tell from the way the lid sat that it had been carried a long way. Mrs Ferrier followed it through the shop door with her gloves still on. "There's his voice on it," she said. "From the Christmas before he went out to Korea. Can you make it play?"

Ada worked the spools under the lamp after closing. The keys under the chrome were stiff, and each had a small symbol pressed into its face: back, pause, play, forward, forward, and at the far end a cross where the stop should have been. She pressed play first and got a hiss like rain on a tin roof, then a man laughing, then a tune that wavered like a kettle about to sing. She wound it back twice to be certain. Near the end the tape had stretched thin and the splice had lifted, so she cut it out with a razor, laid the ends on a strip of splicing tape, and held her breath while the spindle turned.

The repaired tape gave her the laugh again, and the tune, and then a second voice she had not expected, small and high, asking whether Daddy could hear them yet. Ada sat with her hand on the desk for a long minute before she wrote the date on the ticket.

On Saturday Mrs Ferrier came back alone, took the machine in both hands and pressed the key with the cross herself. The shop went quiet except for the hum of the motor and the little voice asking its question again, and neither of them moved until the reel ran out.
