Media player controls on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small row of black media player symbols tattooed across the inner wrist: rewind, pause, play, fast forward and shuffle. The triangles and bars are solid black with clean, thin edges, and the design sits in a gentle curve following the wrist. The image is in colour with a plain, dark background that keeps the focus on the ink.

Harold had the reels of the Regal threaded by six, the way his father had taught him, and by the time the first trailer rolled the whole of the town's Saturday was sitting in the dark in front of him. He could read a room by the sound of its coats. Tonight they rustled like a crowd that had come looking for a row.

The trouble began halfway through the feature, a comedy someone had dug out of the vaults in a tin that smelled of vinegar. The picture jumped, and a shopkeeper on screen froze mid-sentence with his mouth open. Somebody whistled. Harold pulled the lever and the film ran backwards, the man unsaying his lines, until he found the frame he wanted and let it go.

Mrs Abernethy in row F had come every Saturday since 1961 and never once asked him for anything. Tonight she came up the aisle with her coat over her arm and a folded note in her gloved hand. Could he find the dance hall scene again, the one with the slow waltz? Harold lifted the hatch, found the splice by its scorch mark, and wound the reel back past the thunderstorm to where the music swelled like a wireless warming up.

He stood at the port and watched her in the spill of light, her head tilting along with the strings, until the reel ran out and the screen went white. Afterwards he wound the film back to its first frame and left it there, so that next Saturday, when she came up the aisle again, the dance would be waiting for her.
