Media playback symbols on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo shows a row of media playback symbols running diagonally across the wrist: a rewind arrow pair, two vertical pause bars, a play triangle, a fast-forward pair and a skip symbol. The shapes are solid and simple, with crisp edges against pale skin. The photo is black and white, with the arm filling most of the frame on a dark background.

The cassette was already wound back to the start when Mags pushed it across the bench seat of the old Bedford, the tape gone soft and brown at one corner from the heat off the dash. Outside, the road ran straight as a ruler for forty miles, and nothing moved on it but the shimmer. "Hit rewind," she said. "Then pause. Don't ask me why. Dad always did it that way."

I pressed the chunky grey button and the spools whirred back with a thin sound, like a fly caught in a jam jar. Then I held pause, and the tape sat still in its window while the engine ticked and cooled beside us. Her father had driven this route every second Thursday for nineteen years, selling irrigation pipe to farms that were mostly dust now. He had recorded the Gallup station onto this tape because it was the only thing in the cab that still worked properly.
We pressed play. A man read the weather, then came a hiss, then a laugh that was obviously not meant for us. Mags skipped ahead, impatient, and I thought she had given up until a burst of fast-forward static gave way to a voice I did not know, saying the road would be clear by noon.
She reached over and pressed play again, from the very beginning, and said nothing at all.
