Mandala and crescent moon design

Geometric · Mixed · Flash

A black ink mandala sits centred within a large crescent moon, both built from layered petal shapes and fine dotted stippling. Behind them, a circular wash of blue and purple watercolour fades to white at the edges, with a row of three dots above the mandala. The composition is symmetrical and the ink is crisp against the soft colour of the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon would not lie flat on my pricking card, so on the third night I stopped trying to draw it whole and began from the middle, the way my mother taught me to start a rose. Mrs Hallam wanted the crescent worked into a shawl for her husband's boat, and she wanted it finished before the spring tides, which meant I was pricking holes by the lamp until my eyes ran.

Every petal needed its own count. Nine pins to a half-circle, then the fine ground of dots that the old lacemakers called the sea's breath, which Mrs Hallam insisted on because her husband used to say the harbour sparkled like that before a northerly. I worked the horns of the crescent first, then filled the curve with rings that folded inward like the courses of a well. Somewhere past midnight I set three beads above the centre, a small stitch of stars she had asked for, and the whole thing finally sat true on the card.

When she came for it, I hung the shawl across the kitchen window with the harbour lamp behind it. Her husband's boat, the Maud Ellery, was still out past the breakwater, and I had not told her the tide was turning. She stood with her hand over her mouth while the light came through the holes in the moon and laid a pale crescent across the flagstones, and then, faint and bright, a second moon on the water beyond the glass. Neither of us spoke. Then the lamp on the Maud Ellery blinked twice, and she folded the shawl over her arm and went down to the quay.
