Hamsa hand design with om and eye
Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a hamsa hand with an om symbol and a detailed eye at its centre. Flowers, leaf-like feathers, a small diamond and paisley-style shapes fill the fingers and palm. The fine outlines are drawn in grey pencil or ink on a pale background, with light shading and no colour.

Mind the puddle, it's deeper than it looks, and it has been deeper since Tuesday. Come under the awning, where the tarpaulin doesn't drip on the paper. I'm not selling pastries, I'm selling hands. Five pounds for the small ones, twelve for the big, and each one comes with a promise I wrote in my own hand, which is more than the council ever gave me.

Now, you want the story of the hand. Stand still and listen over the rain. Forty years ago a man called Idris Vale came to this market with a suitcase of drawings and nothing else. Every morning he sat on a crate by the fish stall and drew the same shape: an open palm with five fingers spread, as if it meant to catch something thrown down from a window. The fishmonger laughed and said a hand was no use to anyone who couldn't pay the rent with it.
Then one wet November a girl came running past with her ribbons soaked through, shouting that a boy across the square had looked at her and her luck had gone sour. Idris didn't ask her to explain. He took a grey pencil and drew a single eye in the middle of the palm, then an om above it to quiet the noise in the head, then a small diamond in the first finger to catch whatever light there was. He gave it to her for nothing. By Friday the boy had been given a flower and a feather, and by the next market the whole row had hands pinned to their collars.
Idris is gone now, and the crate went to the skip. But every drawing I sell still has the eye in the middle, and I still sit where he sat. Take your pick. I'd go for the big one myself, for a hand that has been looked at too long.
