Black and grey realism tattoo of a mermaid seated on rocks, gazing away with wind-blown hair and small birds around her, on the outer thigh.

Mermaid and birds on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a mermaid seen from behind, seated on a rocky outcrop with her long hair blown to one side, and a scatter of small birds in flight beside her. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth and tonal, giving the rock, hair and tail a realistic, three-dimensional look. The piece is entirely in black and grey and fills the outer thigh, shown across three phone photos in a collage.

My grandfather told me this on the ward at St Ebba's, where he had been put to wait for his heart to make up its mind, and he kept his eyes on the window the whole time, as if the birds might still be out there.

She was called Marisol Penhallow, though everybody on the cliff path called her Mari, and she had a way of sitting on the flat stone below the lamp room with her back to the village, facing the water as though the sea owed her an apology. The fishermen said she was touched. The vicar said she was lonely. Grandad said she was simply the only one who looked at the sea without flinching, and that was why the mermaid under the rock would come up to talk to her when the tide was low enough to show the weed.

On the last night, the wind took her hair clean out to one side and the gulls came down in a loose black scatter, and she stood up and walked out along the rock to where the ferry lights were bobbing. He never said whether she reached them. He only said that when the boats went out at dawn, they found the stone bare, and a long wet mark on it, curving down toward the water, and no footprints at all.
