Magnolia and ink splatter on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two pink and red magnolia blooms with soft shading across the petals, set against loose black ink splatter. The flowers are rendered in colour with smooth gradients, while the splatter adds bold dark contrast. The four panels show the shoulder from the back, side and front, with the design wrapping over the top of the arm.

The ink went over at ten past four, which is the hour Nan always said nothing good happens in a print shop. I had the proof of the magnolia print pinned to the bench, twelve sheets of Rives paper, and the jar of lamp-black was on its side before my elbow knew what it had done.

Mr Okafor, who owned the shop and had never once raised his voice, came to look over my shoulder and said nothing for a long time. Then he picked up a sable brush, dabbed a little rose madder onto the blot nearest the edge, and asked whether I knew what magnolias did before they put out leaves. I said no. They bloom on bare wood, he said, and they take the cold on the chin and don't apologise for it.
We spent the week reworking the plate. Every splatter I had cursed became a fleck of spent rain or a bruise on the sky behind the flower. The bloom I drew came from Nan's tree in the yard, which had dropped its first petals onto the black as if it meant to. The client, a woman from Hackney who rang every morning to ask about the wet ink, came in on the Friday and stood over the proof for a while.
She asked if the dark bits were meant to be there. I told her they were an accident. She said accidents were the only honest part of any picture and bought the whole run. The last sheet I kept for myself, and I still see it on the wall, one pink petal lying on the splatter where the ink ran out.
