Woman portrait with birds and peony on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a woman's head in profile with her eyes closed and her hair gathered in a high bun, with two birds perched above and beside her. A large peony flower and leaves sit below her face and across the lower part of the design. The piece is worked in black and grey with fine linework and soft shading, set against bare skin on the outer thigh.

Mr Ashdown from the mainland boat says the new keeper's wife at Carrick Point has taken to painting birds on the lime wash of her kitchen wall. She sits by the window when the light turns gold, he says, and the gulls come down to the sill as if she has called them. I told him gulls go where there is bread. He laughed and said I was no romantic, which is true enough, but I have kept the lamp trimmed for nineteen years and I know what a bird means when it stops on a rail.
On the night the storm took the lower fence, I climbed the tower with the paraffin and found a sparrow dead on the gallery, its feathers soaked flat. I buried it under the big pink peony Mam loved, and I said nothing over it, because there was nothing to say that the wind had not already said louder.
Come at the equinox if the boat runs. The peony has one bloom open, dark as a wet plum. I will show you the stone with the bird scratched on it, and you can tell me whether I am being foolish. Your brother, Tom.
