Mermaid in an anchor frame on a thigh
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A mermaid sits on a rock with her back turned, her long hair falling over one shoulder, while a ship and small birds sit in the sky behind her. The oval border is formed by two anchors and is capped with a fleur-de-lis, and the sea is shown with fine stippled waves. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey with bold outlines and soft shading across the tail and background, and it fills most of the frame on the thigh.

The sea had risen over the quays of Saltmere before the great-grandmothers were born, and the people who stayed learned its habits the way they learned weather. Every morning a mermaid sat on the Grey Rock with her back to the town, combing out her long hair and watching the horizon for a ship that had not come home. The fishers called her the Lookout. Nobody had seen her face in living memory, and they agreed that was a mercy.

Ada Fenwick, who kept the last lamp on the breakwater, had no patience for mercies. One autumn she rowed out with a sack of salt herring and a question she had carried since her brother sailed on the Marigold. The mermaid did not turn. "Your brother's ship is in the bay," Ada called across the water. "Its anchor is down under the chapel tower, where the bell went over the side." The hair lifted on the wind. A gull went over, then three more, small and sharp against the cloud.
The tail shifted on the rock, scales catching what little light there was. "I know where it lies," the mermaid said at last. "I have been waiting for someone to row out and ask me to fetch it."
They hauled the anchor up together at slack water, Ada pulling the rope hand over hand while the mermaid sang low under the hull until the chain came free. The Marigold's bell came up tangled in weed, and when Ada struck it the sound went out across the grey sea like a door opening. That night the lamp on the breakwater stayed dark for the first time in a hundred years, because there was no longer anyone on the rock who needed to watch for ships.
