Tree and birds on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo covers much of the upper back, showing a tree with dense foliage that curls into a near circle. Trailing roots and fine vine-like tendrils spiral down from the trunk, and three pale grey birds fly off to the upper right. Shading is soft and tonal against the skin, and the composition is centred on the spine with the birds balancing the open space at the top.

The mule would not pass the tree on the Ashgate road, so Halvard climbed down into the dust and led it round by the bridle. The tree had no business growing out of the salt crust, yet there it stood, its trunk twisted like wet rope left to dry. Its branches folded back on themselves until the crown made a near circle, and from the roots a tangle of fine vines trailed off across the sand, as if the ground were being slowly wound up.

Teodora at the last waterhole had warned him. 'Don't cut it, don't climb it, and don't count the birds.' He asked why. She poured him a cup of water that tasted of iron and shrugged. 'The tree holds the wind in its roots. Count the birds and you let it out, and the road forgets where you were going.'

On the third morning three pale birds lifted from the crown and banked north over the flats. Halvard was already counting before he could stop himself. One, two, three. The mule sat down in the sand. The air went flat and still, and the heat pressed on his ears until he could hear nothing but his own pulse.

He sat beside the trunk until the wind came back, thin and cold from the east, and when he stood the vines had lifted a finger's width from the ground. He poured out the last of his water at the root, the way Teodora would have done, and walked on without looking up.
