Mermaid line tattoo on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single-colour black linework tattoo shows a mermaid with curling hair, a raised arm and a scaled tail that tapers into a curl. Scrolls and spirals fill the figure, and the lines are uniform in weight with no visible shading. The design sits upright on the lower leg against a dark background.

Nobody on the ward at Harbour Hill believed Maggie Tull when she said the drowned girl came up the service stairs at three every morning, but the night porter kept a bucket by the lift for the wet footprints, so somebody had seen something.

Maggie had worked nights for nineteen years. She knew the sounds of the old building: the sluice pump, the drip in bay four, the pharmacy fridge that hummed a flat B. The girl came in with the sea smell first, then a slap of bare feet, and she always stopped at the nurses' station to lift one arm, slowly, as if hailing a boat that had already gone past. Her hair coiled over her shoulders in loops like rope wound onto a drum, and the scales on her tail caught the corridor light in small grey shapes, each the size of a thumbnail, until the tail ended in a curl on the lino.
Maggie never asked her what she wanted. Her mother had told her that the sea folk only wanted to be counted. So each night Maggie walked the length of the ward with her, bed by bed, saying the names aloud: Mr Ashdown, Mrs Pell, young Kieran in bay two who had come off the breakwater. By the time they reached the window the girl had stopped lifting her arm.
On the last night of October the bed by the window was empty, and the girl stood beside it, looking down at the bare mattress. Maggie said the name of the boy who had died there that afternoon, and the girl turned and smiled, a thin curl at one corner of her mouth, and went back down the stairs. The bucket was dry in the morning. Maggie left it where it was.
