Mermaid sitting on a rock on the thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A mermaid is shown from behind, seated on a rocky outcrop with her long hair blowing to one side and her scaled tail trailing over the rock. The linework is fine and the scales and rock are built up with soft grey shading and dark accents. The ink is entirely black and grey, set against pale skin with a light fabric edge at the top right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Her father's boat had been gone three days when the wind turned, and Maren Halse went down to the harbour wall to watch the grey water fold over itself. The fishwives said the sea took one man in every tenth year, and Maren had counted those years on her fingers until she ran out of fingers.

Out past the Scarrow rock, where the gulls would not settle, a woman sat with her back to the town. Her hair ran sideways on the wind like smoke off a wick, and her tail lay across the stone, scaled and heavy, the fin trailing into the surf. Maren's uncle, who had been drinking in the Anchor since noon, swore she was combing the weather out of her hair. Nobody laughed at him.

On the fourth morning the fleet came home without the Halse boat. Maren walked out along the wall alone at low tide, picking her way across the weed, until she reached the rock. The woman did not turn. She only lifted one hand and pointed down at the shallows, where a net, torn and knotted with her father's mark, drifted among the stones.

Maren waded in to her knees and took the net. It was heavy with something other than fish. When she looked up the rock was bare, and the tide was already creeping over the place where the tail had lain, slow and grey as a wash of ink.
