Seated mermaid on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A seated mermaid is shown from behind, with long hair blowing to one side and her head turned slightly away. Her scaled tail is shaded with fine stippled dots, while the fin is drawn with light, sketchy lines that fade toward the edges. The design is in black ink and greys and sits against a plain skin background with a dark, cluttered workspace behind it.

The wind had got into the fish market again by midnight, rattling the shutters of Grieve's Wharf, and I knew before I saw her that Nell Ostler would be out on the bottom step of the slipway. She always sat with her back to the lamps, hair thrown sideways by the gusts, staring at the black water as if it owed her money. Nobody had ever seen her tail, though the lads swore it flashed silver under the quay lights when the tide was high.

I brought her a flask of tea that night because the cold was bad and my van was parked right above her. She didn't turn round. She said the harbour had been counting its scales again, that the small sounds at the water's edge were the ones it kept for itself, a patter like rain on a tin roof. I told her the council had men out with a pressure washer, and she laughed in a way that made the gulls go quiet.
The fin was the thing I kept coming back to. Under the sodium light it looked hardly there at all, just a few pale lines drawn quick and then left to fade, the way a wake disappears behind a boat. I asked her once why she never finished the edges. She said nothing worth keeping was ever fully drawn; you sketched what you were sure of and let the rest go soft.
When I stood to leave, she was already smaller, a dark shape on the slipway with her hair streaming out over the water. I drove home with the heater on full and the empty flask rolling on the seat beside me. Next morning the tide had taken the steps clean, and the only trace left was a thin line of foam, fading toward the quay.
