Mermaid with fish and crab on forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a mermaid with flowing hair and tail swims diagonally across the inner forearm, trailing a small fish and a crab. The shapes are bold and simplified with clean edges and no shading. The pale skin and plain dark background keep the focus on the black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The murex beds have gone thin again, and the foreman at the vats wants your basket filled before the tide turns. You kneel on the wet stones with your sleeves tied back and the brine already sharp on the air, and the crab beside your foot does not scuttle away when you reach for it. It only lifts one claw, the way the old women do when they are asking for a coin.

Your grandmother told you the sea-women keep a ledger. Atargatis writes down every shell taken from her reef, she said, and the water holds the record where nothing can be rubbed out. You laughed at that and filled three baskets in a single morning. Now small silver fish gather at your ankles, nudging the crab toward you as though they have agreed on something between them.

You look up and she is there on the rock, black against the glare, hair pouring down her back like weed in a current, her tail curled behind her in a long arc. She does not speak. She points past you, at the dye vats smoking along the shore, and then at your empty basket. Then she sinks with one flick of her fin, and the crab walks after her into the foam.

That evening the foreman counts what you have brought and frowns at the bare bottom of the basket. You tip it out onto the floor so he can see for himself. There is nothing but the dark spiral of a single shell, too thin to be worth the dye. He sends you home with a warning, and you take the long road above the harbour with salt drying white along your skirt, and you do not go back to the reef again.
