Crow perched on a branch on a wrist
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black crow sits on a bare branch that wraps around the inner wrist. The bird is filled in with dense black ink, while the twigs are drawn with thinner, broken strokes and light grey shading. The photograph is taken at an angle against a pale, blurred background.

Dear Tom,

The crow came back on Tuesday, the morning the Margaret Ann went out without you. It sat on the dead blackthorn over the net shed, where the branches go grey and bare and crook round the gate as if they're trying to hold it shut. I threw a crust at it and it looked at me the way Mam used to look at a bad sum, then it took the crust and went back to the same twig. Mr Pelling says it's the same bird that sat there the winter Dad went over. I told him that's nonsense, crows don't keep to one branch for thirty years, and he said that's exactly what crows do.
Fourteen boats went out this week and eleven came back by dark. I have counted them off from the pier every evening, with the lamp in the window so the men can see the house. The crow counts too, I think. It turns its head at every engine it hears and goes quiet when a hull comes round the breakwater, and it doesn't fly off until the last one is tied up.
Yesterday I went up to the shed to fetch the spare twine and found a brass collar stud on the sill, the one you lost in April. I don't know how it got there. I have decided it was the crow, because that is easier to live with than the other explanations, and because it is the only thing on this coast that has given anything back this year.
Come home in one piece. The bird is still waiting on the blackthorn, and so am I.
Love, Nell
