A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had rowed the brine-stained dinghy out past the skerries for eleven years, always alone, always with the same instruction from the abbot pinned to the wheelhouse door: bring back what the tide offers and nothing more. The tide had offered him nothing but kelp and drowned gulls since Lent. Now the wheel of the old fishing boat spun loose under his palm, its spokes salt-grey, and the wind shoved the bow towards the rocks as if someone else were steering.

He saw the rose first. It floated on the swell, red as a cardinal's sash, its stem trailing like a loose thread. Then came the green hair, lifting and settling on the water, and a face turned towards him with the patience of a schoolmistress. She lifted one hand, not to wave but to beckon, and rolled onto her side so the pink and gold of her tail flashed like a fish's belly. Somewhere beneath her, in the sunken rigging of an older wreck, a bell rang once.

Anselm had sworn no vows to the sea. He had vowed himself to the Lord, and the Lord had never asked him to follow a stranger into the reef. Still, his hands turned the wheel as though the boat had a mind of its own. The rose kept pace ahead of him, always just beyond the reach of his oar. Each time he slowed, the mermaid slowed, and in the spray the words seemed to shape themselves on the air: follow me.

They ran aground at dawn in a cove he had never charted, sand the colour of cream and a single white stone on which someone had carved his name. The rose lay on the stone, petals open. The mermaid was gone. Anselm climbed out, knelt, and found the bell wedged beneath the tideline, green with age, its clapper still faintly warm from the sun. He rang it once, and the abbey bell answered across the water, late, as if it had been waiting for him to find his own way home.
