Mixed · Flash
A stylised drawing of a woman with long, flowing dark hair and a jewelled headpiece, wrapped in a white cloth and resting one hand near her chin. The frost had got into the glasshouse again by the second week of January, and Mam sat on an upturned crate with her hair down, working the last knots out while I scraped ice off the panes. She never wore it up in winter. It came past her hips, dark as wet slate, and she said it kept her warmer than the wool coat did.

Tucked above one ear was the silver headpiece Dad bought her at the Keighley fair the year before I was born, a little hinged thing set with a green stone that had lost most of its shine. Through the tangles she had pushed three dried sprigs of lavender and a hellebore she'd cut that morning from under the south wall. When I asked why she was dressing up for a cold house, she laughed. 'The flowers don't know it's January, love. Neither do the hens.'
We weren't there for the hens. The sweet pea seed had gone soft in its tins, and the only thing left worth saving was a row of pale violas in the back bed that Gran had carried down from a farm near Malham in her apron pocket, roots wrapped in newspaper. Mam pulled her white shawl tighter over her shoulders, lifted the trays one by one, and pressed a thumb into each root ball until she was satisfied it still held.
By dusk the trays were on the kitchen windowsill, the roots faintly steaming against the cold glass. Mam drew the pins from her hair and let the last lavender sprig fall into the sink. Then she sat beside me, combed the knots from my plait one strand at a time, and tucked a single violet into it. 'There,' she said. 'Now we've both got something alive to show for January.'
