Cartoon woman with roses and banner flash

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A coloured illustration of a cartoon woman with voluminous brown curls, a pearl earring and a gold, off-the-shoulder gown, with a small beast emblem tattoo on her shoulder. She is framed by an oval of rose vines and red roses, with a scrolled banner across the bottom bearing the words 'Til the last petal falls. The bold dark outlines, smooth shading and warm parchment background suggest a traditional flash sheet design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose under the glass had three petals left when the Wendle Brothers' Fair pulled into the field behind the gasworks, and Nell Ashdown counted them before she unlocked the ticket hut. Her father had won the thing at a card table in Carlisle, so the story went, from a man who swore it would last as long as it stayed out of the wind. Nell had never believed a word of it, but she believed in the glass, and she dusted it every morning with the sleeve of her cardigan.

The beast booth stood at the far end of the midway, a painted lion with a tin crown above the flap, and its keeper, Gideon Harrow, came to the hut each evening to buy one ticket he never used. "Keep the change," he said on the Tuesday, and on the Wednesday, and on the Thursday, until she asked him what he was really paying for. He looked at the rose for a long time. "Something that doesn't pretend," he said, and went off whistling toward the lion's cage.

On the last night of the fair the wind came up off the river and rattled every tent pole in the field. Nell lifted the glass from its stand, carried it out past the rope fence, and tipped it open. The second-last petal went first, then the one after, and the final petal lifted, turned once in the lamplight, and sailed low over the mud toward the lion's cage.

She did not run after it. In the morning the field was bare except for the ruts of departing wagons and a tin crown lying face down by the gate. Nell sat on the hut step with the empty glass in her lap and listened to the river, which had never sounded so loud.
