Metallic geometric bands on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's forearm and wrist are covered in several thin temporary metallic tattoos, shown as bands of silver and black with geometric blocks, lines and dots. The designs wrap fully around the arm in stacked rows, with a braided brown bracelet sitting between two of the bands. The soft natural light and shallow focus keep the wrist sharp while the hair and knitted top fall away into the background.

You have the key tapping under your fingers at ten to six, when the last train through Hollin Bridge is already a rumour in the cutting. The office smells of hot oil and wet coats. Mr Pryce has left you the ledger and a sealed envelope marked for the stationmaster's eyes only, and you have not opened it, though the wax has already cracked at one corner from the heat of the stove.

Outside, the wire on the poles hums. Messages come in dots and strokes, a grammar of short and long, and you have learned to read them the way your mother reads the weather in the cabbage leaves. Tonight the sounder gives you a string of blocks, three long and a short, then a line of single dots spaced like fence posts. Nobody sends that in the county. It is the code the sawmill men use for a load that must not be signed for.

You copy it onto the back of a timetable, pencil pressing hard, while the platform lamp throws silver light across the paper. By the time you have the last dot down, the envelope is open on the desk beside you, and the name at the bottom of the letter is written in a hand that is not Pryce's.

You fold the timetable into your sleeve, bolt the door, and walk out into the frost with the wire singing over your head. Whatever is waiting at the siding, you will be the one who reads it first.
