Overlapping triangles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised arm shows a small geometric tattoo of interlocking triangles forming a star with a diamond at its centre. The linework is thin, uniform and solid black, with no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on the lower forearm against a plain pale wall, with the hand and fingers visible above it.

Margaret had brought a protractor because she was the sort of woman who did that, and it sat in her handbag beside a packet of mints and the programme from the reunion. The sports hall smelled of floor polish and warm crisps. Someone had strung bunting between the climbing ropes, and a man she half recognised was telling the barman that the old school had been knocked down and rebuilt as flats, as though it were news that might still hurt.

She saw Tessa Doyle across the room, and Tessa saw her, and both of them lifted a hand at the same height, the way they had in Year Nine when notes went back and forth beneath Mr Pardoe's nose. Those notes had all been drawn on squared paper, triangles nested inside triangles with a diamond at the heart, every line ruled so that nothing wobbled. Tessa had called the system the Locked Room. You had to fold the sheet along the diagonals before the message showed, and for three years only the two of them had ever managed it.
"You still carry it," Tessa said, nodding at the bag. Margaret took out a square of paper gone soft as cloth, its creases worn white, and held it out. Neither of them unfolded it. Tessa's thumb found the first crease without looking, the way a hand finds a light switch in a house it has left.
"I can't believe I was ever that certain of anything," Margaret said. Tessa pressed the diamond flat with her palm, opened it along the last fold, and read the pencilled line aloud in the same flat voice she had used for Pardoe's register. It said only: Meet me in the middle, where the lines all cross. Across the hall the bunting stirred, and for a moment the barman, the flats and the old playing field seemed to fold along the same line.
