Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's two forearms, each with a band of black geometric linework. Each band combines solid horizontal stripes with angular zigzag and chevron-like shapes. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the bands sit against pale skin and a dark top on a light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Roper had been stitching the same zigzag into the cuffs of her father's shirts since the winter the lamp-room flooded, and she could do it blindfold. Tonight the lamp-room was dry again, and the overman wanted the armbands for the rescue crew. Each band was a strip of black oilcloth, striped across the middle like a bruise that would not heal, with chevrons above and below so a man could read his place in the chain without a light.

She worked at the kitchen table while the kettle ticked. Her mother sat across from her, sorting coal-dust from the lamp wicks into jars and saying nothing about the sixty-one names pinned on the chapel board. The pattern had come from a drawing her grandfather made on the back of a pay slip, a shape of the old shaft roof seen from above, all hooks and doubled lines. Ada had never liked it. It was too exact for a place where nothing stayed where it was put.

Near midnight the bell rang twice, the signal for a fall at the north level. She pulled the last band tight, knotted it, and carried the pile to the pit head in the cold. Men were already queuing with their sleeves rolled to the elbow. She handed out the bands one by one and watched each man slide his arm through and check the stripes against the one beside him.

The last man took his band without looking at it. "Same as last time, is it?" he asked. Ada said it was the same pattern, and it was, and she was not sure that was the comfort she meant.
