Michigan outline with red heart on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A thin black outline of the US state of Michigan, showing both peninsulas, sits on the inner wrist and forearm. A small solid red heart is placed on the lower eastern edge of the lower peninsula. The linework is even and clean, with no shading, and the plain background of bedding is softly out of focus.

He kept looking past me at the river, where the fog was lifting off the Detroit side and a tanker moved slow as a cathedral. His wife sat in the passenger seat with a shoebox on her knees. She had been born in Windsor, he told me, and her mother had been born in Port Huron, and for fifty years the two of them had been crossing back and forth to visit a town neither of them lived in. The box held letters, not clothes. He didn't say whose letters, and I didn't ask.

I stamped the card and handed it back. Then I saw the map had slipped from the dashboard into the footwell, and the heart had caught the light from the booth. I picked it up and passed it through the window. He thanked me, folded it along its old creases, and tucked it under his arm as if it were something that might be needed again. The barrier lifted. I watched their taillights climb the ramp towards the bridge, and the red mark stayed with me longer than it should have.
