Michigan state outline with Home script
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line black outline of the state of Michigan sits on the upper arm, with the upper peninsula at the top and the lower peninsula below. The word Home is written in a cursive script just beneath the lower peninsula. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, set against plain skin with a white clapboard wall and greenery in the background.

Dear Walt,

The ferry was late again so I sat on the pier at St Ignace with my feet over the water and watched the freighters go past toward Lake Huron. Mother sends her love and says the bank man has been round twice about the back field. She also says you are not to send money you cannot spare, which I have told her you never do, so she should stop worrying about that and start worrying about the weather, which is turning already and the blueberries are finished.
I went to the library on Tuesday and asked Mrs Haarala for the atlas. She knew what I wanted before I opened my mouth. She said every boy who ever went south from here wanted the same page, and she turned it so the mitten faced us both, the top part sitting up on the lake like a thumb that had been pressed too hard. I traced it with my finger the way you used to on the oilcloth at supper, and I got the lower half wrong, I always do, I make the bottom too fat.
So I have drawn it for you on the back of this sheet, in pencil, and I am sending it so you can hold it against the Texas dust and check my lines. Under the bottom curve I have written Home, small, the way Grandpa wrote names on his tackle box. Don't laugh. Mother would say a thing like that is only for sailors and sinners, and then she would ask to see it properly.
Write when you get the chance. Tell me the sky is wider out there, and then tell me you are coming home at Christmas, and I will believe the first part.
Love, Ada
