A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The marquee smelled of cut grass and sausage rolls nobody had touched, and Dad's best man was on his third attempt at a speech he had printed on the back of a betting slip. Dennis Pryce had been in a band called The Velvet Hounds in 1974, and he had not told anyone he planned to sing their one single until he was already halfway up the steps to the little stage the caterers had built from pallets.

He had painted his face for it. White greasepaint across the forehead and cheeks, and a black zigzag drawn from the hairline down across one eye, the same mark he had worn at the Pier Ballroom when his hair was thick enough to stand up on its own. Aunt Carol put her hand over her mouth. My mum muttered that he would pull a muscle. The DJ, who was twenty and had never heard of the Hounds, looked for the off switch and found nothing to press.

Dennis got three lines in. Then he stopped, the microphone whistling softly, and the whole tent waited while he looked at the ceiling as if the words were written up there. Nobody moved. Then Grandma Ivy, who is ninety-one and has never once been on time, began humming the tune from her chair, and the bride's brother joined in, then the groom's uncles, until three hundred people were singing a song nobody knew they had memorised.

Dennis wiped his face on his sleeve, which only spread the bolt into a grey smudge across his cheek, and he came down the steps laughing. He left his betting slip on the stage. I picked it up later. It said only, in capitals, SHE SAID YES SO SING.
