Colour tattoo of two black Mickey and Minnie silhouettes, with a pink bow on Minnie, arranged in a heart of purple and teal stars and the word Believe in lettering, on a lower leg.

Mickey and Minnie heart with stars on a calf

Lettering · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two solid black Mickey and Minnie Mouse head silhouettes, with Minnie wearing a pink bow, set in a heart shape. Purple and teal four-pointed stars, small black sparkles and scattered red, blue and purple dots frame the heart, and the word Believe is written between the two heads in hand-drawn script. Black outlines and flat fills dominate, with colour used for the bow, stars and dots, and the skin around it is slightly red.

The hatch on Tarn Reach has stuck since the spring cycle, and you are the only one left aboard who still knows the trick of it: a knock, a twist, then a hard shove with your shoulder. Behind it waits the cargo bay, where the salvage crates sit stacked exactly as Ottoline Brisk left them, each one labelled in grease pencil before the hull cooled. You find the crate marked ROUND EARS, her name for the old toy dolls, and you pry the lid with a bent spanner.

Inside, wrapped in foil, are two pressed-card silhouettes of round-eared heads, one with a bow cut from red felt. Beneath them is a note in her looping hand: Stars for the ones who stay awake. Believe is the only word I could spell all the way through. You remember the night she drew them on the back of a ration chart, the lights dimmed to amber, the two of you laughing over a jar of purple and teal ink that spilled across the galley table and never came out of the grain.

The relay chimes. The convoy docks in forty hours, and the bay must be clear by then. You could bin the crate. Instead you carry it to the observation blister, where the stars hang unblinking over the dust of the ring, and you press the two black heads against the cold glass, one above the other, the way she always set them. Between them, the spacing makes a heart. You try to say the word aloud and find you cannot manage it without her voice.

So you tell the dock master the bay is clear. You tell her you kept the bow. Then you leave the crate's lid open on the blister ledge, so the next salvager who wanders up here can see what two people made out of nothing when the nights were long, and you go down to meet the convoy with the foil folded in your breast pocket.
