Butterfly and ribbon heart with I Will Fight script
Colour · Photo
A purple awareness ribbon is shaped into a heart, with a blue and grey butterfly with detailed wings resting across its centre. The words I Will Fight are written in cursive script across the top, and a small red heart sits on the right-hand ribbon tail. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the piece a dimensional look against the skin.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Hollin House believed the lift would work again before Easter, so when Marisol from twelve came up the stairs with a carrier bag of purple wool, we all knew something was happening. She sat on my step, breathing hard, and pulled out a skein the colour of bruised plums. "For the bake sale," she said. "Mrs Pryce wants ribbons on everything."

I told her the bake sale was for the roof fund, and the roof had been leaking into my airing cupboard since the spring. The council had sent three letters and a man in a hi-vis jacket who looked at the ceiling and said he would put it in the report. Marisol said the report was a fight in itself, and that every letter needed answering in ink, not in tea stains.
So we knitted. Twelve women on folding chairs in the community room, needles clicking under the strip light, a tin of custard creams going soft between us. Someone sketched a butterfly on the back of a council leaflet and we copied it into the wool, wings in grey and blue, then stitched a little red heart onto one loop, because Marisol insisted the thing needed a pulse.
On the morning of the sale the lift finally groaned up to fourteen. Marisol stepped out first, holding the banner, and pinned it to the notice board beside the broken bin chute. The roof men came the next week. I still keep one ribbon folded in my handbag, the red heart facing out, so the wind off the car park can't take it.
