Mickey and Minnie quote on lower back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
A black script quote runs across the lower back, reading When You Wish Upon A Star on the left and Dreams Do Come True on the right, with outlined Mickey and Minnie Mouse heads between the words. The linework is thin and even, with the bow on Minnie the only colour, a small splash of red. The skin is shown from behind with a navel piercing and the top of a black waistband in frame.

Dear Ysolde,

The wagon came back from Marrow Fen with its lid scorched and the lettering half gone, so Master Tennant had me repaint the whole thing before the Lantern Fair. You will laugh, but I spent three evenings on a single line of script, copying the loops from the grocer's ledger because the sign-writer's book was lost in the flood. When you wish upon a star, it says, and I wanted the letters thin enough that a man reading them from the road would think they had been breathed onto glass.
Then the showman, Corvin Hale, came round wanting two little round-eared mice painted either side of the middle words. I told him the mice were not to be painted at all, since the Crown has opinions about likenesses of the hedge-folk, and he said the Crown was for people who could not hold a brush. So I drew them in black outline only, the heads like two overturned bowls, and asked him what the lady mouse should be given to set her apart. He wanted a bow. I gave her a bow the colour of the cherry on the fair's poster, and that was the only red on the whole lid.
The lid went onto the wagon at dusk. Hale stood beneath it with his hat off, reading the words aloud as if he had written them himself, and when he reached the end he tapped the lid twice where the mice sat, the way you would knock on a door you expected to open. Dreams do come true, he said, and I am sure he meant it only as an advertisement.
Write soon. Tell Mother the ledger lines have gone to the bindery and I have my fee in silver.
