Sit yourself down on the upturned bucket and mind the nettles, they've got opinions about visitors. This garden was Albert's before it was ours, and he never planted a thing without a reason. The bed by the back wall is shaped like a heart, cut with a spade and a length of string, and he swore the sun came up behind it every morning in June just to make a fool of the sweet peas.

The summer he dug it, the village was grey with rain for six weeks. Albert's wife, Maud, stood at the kitchen window each morning counting the clouds like sheep. He didn't argue with her. He just went out in his boots, raked the heart clean, and sowed marigolds in a ring around the edge, orange as a struck match, so that whenever the clouds parted the light had something to land on first.

On the seventh Sunday the sky tore open over the allotments and the sun came straight across the wall and lit that heart like a lamp. Maud came out in her apron with her hands still floury and stood there so long the bread overproved. Albert said nothing. He only pointed at the bed, then at her, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the back step.

Now the heart has gone to rhubarb and nobody remembers the string. But every morning I come out before the frost lifts and stand where she stood, because the light still finds that corner first. Pass me the trowel, love. Some things you water even when you're not sure anyone's watching.
